There are places that don’t impose themselves forcefully, but enter quietly, the way certain hills do when you cross them without noticing exactly when you’re inside. Roero is one of these places: discreet, less talked about compared to the nearby Langhe, but capable of holding a depth that reveals itself only to those who have time to truly stop. Today we discover together its villages, its flavors, and its splendid landscape. <\/p>\n\n

Where Roero is located and how it shapes the landscape<\/h2>\n\n

Roero extends in lower Piedmont<\/strong>, on the left bank of the Tanaro river, right across from the Langhe. It’s a land that belongs mainly to the province of Cuneo<\/strong>, but approaches and dialogues with that of Asti, creating a geographical and cultural continuity that goes beyond administrative boundaries. <\/p>\n\n

Its municipalities\u2014including Canale, Mont\u00e0, Sommariva Perno, Govone, Pocapaglia, Santa Vittoria d’Alba\u2014draw a constellation of small centers suspended between hills, woods, and sudden glimpses of earth.<\/p>\n\n

Because Roero isn’t just gentle hills: it’s also a carved territory<\/strong>, marked by a unique geological phenomenon.<\/p>\n\n

The Rocche del Roero: when the earth opens up<\/h2>\n\n

Here the landscape changes rhythm.<\/p>\n\n

The Rocche del Roero<\/strong> are walls of sand and clay, deep natural canyons that formed over millennia through erosion. Walking beside them means seeing the earth stratified, bare, as if time had decided to show itself without filters. <\/p>\n\n

They’re one of the most distinctive elements of Roero: not just beauty, but living geological memory. Around them, the woods reclaim space, alternating with vineyards and orchards, creating a wilder landscape compared to the almost perfect order of the Langhe. <\/p>\n\n

A territory of passage, but never secondary<\/h2>\n\n

The history of Roero is linked to that of a noble family, the Roero<\/strong>, who in the Middle Ages gave their name to these lands. But even before that, this was a territory of passage: between plain and hill, between Turin and Liguria, between markets and trade routes. <\/p>\n\n

This position made Roero a place of encounter, of exchange, but also of hard work, tied to the land and its seasons.<\/p>\n\n

For a long time it remained in the shadow of other more celebrated territories, and perhaps it’s precisely this that allowed it to preserve a certain authenticity, without ever becoming completely “constructed” for those arriving from outside.<\/p>\n\n

Roero products: identities born from the land<\/h2>\n\n

Here the land isn’t just landscape, but substance.<\/p>\n\n

Roero DOCG<\/h3>\n\n

The wine that bears the territory’s name is Roero DOCG<\/strong>, produced mainly from Nebbiolo grapes. It’s an elegant red, more delicate compared to that of the Langhe, with a structure that speaks of balance and finesse rather than power. <\/p>\n\n

Alongside it, Roero Arneis DOCG<\/strong>, the distinctive white of these hills, fresh, mineral, capable of perfectly expressing the sandy nature of the soil.<\/p>\n\n

Roero peaches<\/h3>\n\n

A less known symbol, but deeply rooted, are the peaches of Roero<\/strong>. Cultivated especially around Canale and its surroundings, they find an ideal environment in these sandy soils. <\/p>\n\n

They’re fruits that marked the local agricultural economy, especially in the twentieth century, and that still today tell of a direct connection between people and land.<\/p>\n\n

Other products and traditions<\/h3>\n\n

There’s no shortage of hazelnuts, vegetables, and a whole agricultural production that remains on a smaller scale compared to the Langhe, but precisely for this reason more tied to a family and local dimension.<\/p>\n\n

Here food is never just a product: it’s gesture, it’s season, it’s continuity.<\/p>\n\n

A landscape to cross slowly<\/h2>\n\n

Roero isn’t visited.<\/p>\n\n

It’s crossed, listened to, allowed to happen.<\/p>\n\n

Its secondary roads, the paths that run alongside the Rocche, the rows of vines that suddenly open onto unexpected views, invite you to slow down. There’s no need to constantly search for something to see: it’s the territory itself that, step by step, tells its story. <\/p>\n\n

And perhaps this is its most authentic trait: not having to prove anything.<\/p>\n\n

Roero today: between recognition and discretion<\/h2>\n\n

In recent years Roero has begun to receive greater attention, also thanks to the UNESCO recognition shared with Langhe and Monferrato.<\/p>\n\n

Yet it maintains its own distance.<\/p>\n\n

It’s a land that welcomes, but doesn’t offer itself completely. That remains faithful to a slower rhythm, less constructed, where it’s still possible to find spaces of silence and authenticity. <\/p>\n\n

If you’re looking for a different Piedmont, less talked about but no less profound, Roero is one of those places you don’t forget quickly.<\/p>\n\n

They remain under your skin, the way things do that don’t need to explain themselves too much.<\/p>\n\n
