Together, we will discover its unique character, from its landscapes to its wines and must-see villages. Ready?  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Monferrato: where it is and how it shapes the landscape<\/h2>\n\n<p>Monferrato stretches across the heart of southern Piedmont, primarily embracing the provinces of Asti and Alessandria, with some fringes reaching into the territories of Turin and Cuneo.<\/p>\n\n<p>It is not a land defined by sharp borders, but rather by a rhythm: that of hills that follow one another without ever truly breaking, creating a continuous, soft, almost undulating landscape.<\/p>\n\n<p>Since 2014, a significant part of this territory has been recognized as a <strong>UNESCO World Heritage site<\/strong>, along with Langhe and Roero, specifically for its ability to tell the millennial story of the relationship between man and land.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/202.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3597\" style=\"width:357px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/202.png 600w, https:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/202-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upper and Lower Monferrato: two souls of the same breath<\/h2>\n\n<p>When talking about Monferrato, two large areas are distinguished, which are not just geographical, but also deeply rooted in identity.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Upper Monferrato<\/strong> (Alto Monferrato), to the south, nears the Ligurian Apennines.<br\/>Here the hills become higher, more wooded, and at times wilder. It is the territory looking toward Acqui Terme and Ovada, already breathing a different, almost border-like air. <\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Lower Monferrato<\/strong> (Basso Monferrato), instead, stretches out more gently between Asti and Casale Monferrato.<br\/>The hills here become more harmonious and open, shaped by rows of vines that follow the curves of the land like lines drawn with patience.<\/p>\n\n<p>Within these two souls, dozens of municipalities, small hamlets, and villages are intertwined\u2014places that often make no noise but guard stories that deserve time.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/i-babaci-di-maranzana-quando-un-paese-si-ripopola-di-immaginazione\/\">Among these, for example, is Maranzana, with its suspended and imaginative world that you can discover here:<br\/> [The village of the Babaci of Maranzana]<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/200.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3595\" style=\"width:415px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/200.png 600w, https:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/200-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A land inhabited by gesture: vineyards, hazelnut groves, memory<\/h2>\n\n<p>Monferrato is a land cultivated for centuries, and every hill tells a precise story of the relationship between man and what grows there.<\/p>\n\n<p>The vineyards are its most recognizable signature.<br\/>Orderly rows that follow the profile of the land, never forcing it, but accompanying it.<\/p>\n\n<p>Alongside the vines, you also find hazelnut groves, fields, and small plots that still maintain human-scale agriculture today.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here, the landscape is never accidental: it is the result of continuous work, made of repeating seasons and gestures passed down through generations.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here is my video with 3 must-see destinations in Monferrato<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Products of Monferrato: when the land becomes identity<\/h2>\n\n<p>To speak of Monferrato inevitably means speaking of what is born from this earth.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>Brachetto d\u2019Acqui<\/strong>, an aromatic and delicate red wine, is perhaps one of the most recognizable symbols.<br\/>A wine that does not seek power, but elegance, fragrance, and lightness.<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/en\/brachetto-dacqui-docg-characteristics-territory-types-and-production\/\">You can learn more here: [Brachetto d\u2019Acqui: history and characteristics]<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p>Alongside it, <strong>Moscato d\u2019Asti<\/strong>, with its never-intrusive sweetness, tells another nuance of the territory: brighter, more immediate, but always tied to quality.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then there are the dishes, those born in home kitchens:<br\/>tajarin, agnolotti del plin, vitello tonnato. A gastronomy that isn&#8217;t built to amaze, but to endure. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Acqui Terme and the Monferrato that heals<\/h2>\n\n<p>Acqui Terme is one of those cities that carry their deepest origin in their name: water.<br\/>Already in Roman times, known as <em>Aquae Statiellae<\/em>, it was a place where people stopped to heal, to rest, and to slow down.<\/p>\n\n<p>Today that soul remains, even if the thermal baths are not always as accessible as they once were. However, a living and tangible sign remains in the heart of the city: <strong>La Bollente<\/strong>, a hot water spring that still flows, silent and continuous, in Piazza della Bollente. It is not just a spot to see, but something to observe calmly, almost to listen to.  <\/p>\n\n<p>But stopping in Acqui only for this would be reductive.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/197.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3592\" style=\"width:379px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/197.png 600w, https:\/\/michelanellevalli.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/197-225x300.png 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>Acqui is also a city of stone and history:<br\/>its intimate streets, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and the Roman remains resurfacing among the architecture tell of a layering that never ceased to exist, but simply adapted to time.<\/p>\n\n<p>And then there is everything that surrounds it.<\/p>\n\n<p>Just outside the center, the landscape returns to being that of the most authentic Monferrato: rolling hills, vineyards, and secondary roads that stretch out without haste.
